Hans Memling (c. 1435–1494) was a German-born painter who became one of the leading representatives of 15th-century Flemish painting. Born in Seligenstadt, he settled in Bruges, where he obtained citizenship in 1465 and developed a highly successful career. His artistic training was influenced by Rogier van der Weyden, under whom he may have studied. He became renowned for his religious paintings, portraits, and altarpieces, characterized by serene figures, meticulous details, and delicate colors. His works were commissioned by religious institutions and patrons from several European countries.
