Title of the painting: Messe in den Katakomben (Mass in the Catacombs)

Name of the artist: Philipp Schumacher

Date: 1915

Visual description: A devotional painting by Philipp Schumacher titled “Mass in the Catacombs” (1915). The scene depicts an Early Christian liturgy celebrated in an underground crypt with stone arches. In the foreground, a priest with a white beard, wearing a purple chasuble, elevates the Chalice. Above him, a mystical vision reveals the Crucified Christ, with angels collecting the Precious Blood from His hands into chalices, while the Holy Spirit (dove) hovers between the Cross and the altar. Early Christians kneel in reverence, and an altar server holds a missal. The altar is marked with the Chi-Rho symbol.
